The Premier League champions are in real need of a hit of creativity and guile in their side, with an over-reliance on Wayne Rooney to prove an attacking spark this season.
The hunt to replace Paul Scholes in the long term has been ongoing for a number of years, with the summer transfer market seeing the club fail to entice a playmaker of quality to Manchester.
The latest link with Barkley certainly makes sense. The 20-year-old has returned to full fitness and has been in scintillating form this season for the Toffees, starting 13 games and netting two goals.
The attacking midfielder has been rewarded for good form with a call-up to the senior England squad and will be in contention to travel to Brazil with the Three Lions next summer for the World Cup.
Moyes has already signed Marouane Fellaini from Everton, and looks set to revisit Goodison Park for Leighton Baines in January. The Merseysiders will be very reluctant to see Baines or Barkley move, but with the potential money on offer, the bright lights of Old Trafford may well be too much for the prodigy to turn down.
Barkley is reminiscent of Wayne Rooney in his career path to date, and has all the attributes to be a real success at United.
His ability on the ball, range of passing, vision and energy are exactly what the Red Devils are currently missing in their team and a move to Manchester seems like an ideal fit.
As a young, homegrown star Barkley also fits the criteria of a player that United usually look to sign.
Just whether Everton would sell their prize asset is another matter, but with Barkley continuing to impress they are likely to have suitors knocking on the door in the new year.
