The 30-year-old enjoyed a successful five-and-a-half year spell with the West London side, as he hit 60 goals in 225 games to make himself a hero with the Fulham faithful, but his departure in August 2012 has left a sour taste in the mouth of Cottagers fans.
Dempsey demanded to leave Fulham after interest from Liverpool, and manager Martin Jol called him "an embarrassment" having refused to play against Norwich. Despite the drawn out speculation with Liverpool, Dempsey finally made a £6m transfer deadline day switch to London neighbours Tottenham, but his stay at White Hart Lane lasted just one year before he returned to the States with Seattle Sounders.
Now, with the MLS season over, Dempsey has been strongly linked with a move back to England, with Stoke and West Ham both rumoured to be interested, but after the departure of Jol from Craven Cottage, new manager Rene Meulensteen appears ready to go ahead with the deal - sparking mixed feelings amongst Fulham fans on Twitter, who are torn between the addition of a quality player and the return of a player who vehemently asked to leave the club just a short time ago.
People talk about the manner in which Dempsey left, but that was all under Jol. Jol ruined the club and many players, in the past. #ffc— Michael Brown (@MicKYxFFC) December 13, 2013
Dempsey back to Fulham? Really?? Not sure how I feel about that. They need him but didn't leave on the best terms #ffc— Darren Demeterio (@DarrenDemeterio) December 13, 2013
Mixed feelings about the return of Dempsey if true-but he was a good solid player for us,as well as a goal scorer and we need that right now— stuart (@stuarts1979) December 14, 2013
I hate that Dempsey may return to the Cottage. but I'm really upset that this long after his departure, we would still need to replace him.— Samantha G. (@samthrax) December 13, 2013
Hearing rumours about a possible return to the cottage for Clint Dempsey. If this true then there definitely exciting times ahead for Fulham— Daniel Bourne (@DanielBourne9) December 12, 2013
