Transfer Clock: Manchester United want €64m striker, Arsenal in for winger

Manchester United and Arsenal lead the headlines...

14 days down, 17 to go until the Transfer Window opens. Our midnight update of the top five stories from the past 24 hours you need to know.

1) Edinson Cavani. Wow. Here goes... Rumours continue that the Uruguayan striker is considering a transfer away from PSG in January just months after signing. Arsenal were linked by the French press last month ahead with Real Madrid and Barcelona, but a fresh report in The Mail claims Chelsea are interested. That is perhaps not surprising considering they were strongly linked with him over the summer.

The Mail however add: "Edinson Cavani could be a surprise departure from Paris St Germain in January. The Uruguayan is keen on a move to the Premier League despite making his move to France a relative success... Manchester United will monitor developments." Signing a striker of Cavani's magnitude would certainly send a message to the rest of the Premier League that David Moyes means business. While their interest is remarkable we can't genuinely see Cavani leaving PSG so soon after signing, or being allowed to especially with them into the last 16 of the Champions League, while the prospect of United spending at or above the €64m PSG paid for him is also questionable.

2) Arsenal are looking into signing German winger Kevin Volland from Hoffenheim, along with Liverpool who are also interested, write The Mirror. The 21-year-old has captained his country at under-21 level and has scored seven times in 15 Bundesliga games this season from the right-wing. He has a contract until 2017 and is valued at around €12 million. HITC's German expert Markus Hanfler touted Volland as an ideal signing for the Gunners just earlier this month. Check him out in action below:

3) West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has told the BBC that he regrets the signing of Andy Carroll due to his extensive injury problems. He said: "Had we known he would be out for this long, we would not have signed him."

Sullivan went onto add however that if Carroll can get back to fitness and start scoring, his response to the same question at the end of the season could be very different, describing the £15 million signing as 'unplayable'.

4) French under-21 attacker Paul-Georges Ntep has set Arsenal on alert by declaring his match at the weekend for Auxerre as his last ever for the French side. Ntep had been linked with Arsenal early last month, stating, 'Arsenal is a club that appeals to any player.' Ligue 1 clubs Marseille and St Etienne have been linked, while Ntep also previously added he did not want to move anywhere to sit on the bench.

5) The Mirror report that Manchester United and Arsenal will battle it out to sign Sami Khedira on the next summer, potentially at a knock-down price. The Real Madrid midfielder rejected a move to United last summer to stay at Madrid, where his form was criticised by the Spanish press early in the season. He has however suffered a cruciate knee injury which means he faces a battle just to make Germany's World Cup squad, where he will reunite with former Real teammate Mesut Ozil. Next summer he will have just one year left on his contract, and United and Arsenal could hope to snap him up for a knock down price, especially considering his injury - while the Mirror's report states Real will hold out for £20 million.
