Reports in Portugal claim United watched Sporting Lisbon yet again, with William Carvalho shining once more.
Manchester United fans will be familiar with the name William Carvalho.
The Sporting Lisbon midfielder with the €45million release-clause has been linked with a possible switch to Old Trafford since the start of the season.
And the reports have only gained credence as David Moyes’ scouting staff have regularly been seen watching the Portuguese club in action.
Moyes himself watched Sporting’s domestic rivals FC Porto last week, and although he was tipped to be running the rule over Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke on that occasion, Carvalho remains a player strongly tipped for a switch to the English champions, especially given the fact that Koke has since declared his contentment in Spain.
Portuguese newspaper Record has today reported that United watched Carvalho (and his Sporting teammates) for the seventh time this season, as they ran out 3-0 winners at home to Belenenses yesterday.
Celtic, Villarreal and Genk were also said to be in attendance, but it is United’s reported interest in a player tipped for greatness that has generated the headlines. And given that the 21-year-old gave an impressive performance as what Record describe as “the defensive pivot”, Moyes has a decision to make.
With the player’s current contract running until 2018, it will be an expensive one, but one that could solve the huge problem in United’s midfield.
And sometimes, the best solutions turn out to be priceless.
