Manchester United latest: Fletcher reaction, Cleverley hopes & midfielder move made easier

All the news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford this weekend…

Every morning we bring you a round-up of the latest transfer news relating to Manchester United, and this weekend was no exception. To read our United-specific transfer news you can find our Saturday report here and our Sunday report here.

United secured a much-needed 3-0 victory away to Aston Villa earlier today. Having been linked with moves away from Old Trafford just hours earlier, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley scored the goals that ensured David Moyes did not suffer three consecutive league defeats.

Welbeck’s two goals came in just three first-half minutes, before Cleverley put the icing on the cake with a second-half drive set up by Wayne Rooney.

The result was vital, and yet it was the return of Darren Fletcher that got many United fans talking both before and after the match.

The Scottish international has not played for United’s first-team for just eight days short of a year. And yet he has battled back from ulcerative colitis to feature for the last 20 minutes this afternoon.

Following the announcement that Fletcher was in the match-day squad, we took to Twitter to gage reaction from United fans and supporters in general, and you can see that article below.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Cleverley revealed his pride in a performance he has needed for quite some time.

“It plays on your mind when you’re a midfielder that you have to score a few goals,” he said. “A year of not scoring came out in my celebration.

I want to keep on from here now and so does the team. Hopefully this is the start of a good run.”

In other news, reported United target Fernando has secured Portuguese citizenship, which would make any move from current club FC Porto far less complicated.

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford. And should a move still be on the cards, the fact that he has European citizenship will make it much easier to secure him.

Then again, perhaps he is just another midfielder in a veritable tombola full of them when it comes to United and transfer rumours.
