Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Darren Fletcher’s return

Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher returned to United's first-team squad today for the match against Aston Villa, and the fans were very happy with the news.

Darren Fletcher has not been in Manchester United’s first-team squad for almost a year. The last time he did appear was on 23 December 2012. And yet this afternoon, David Moyes’ team selection came with something of a twist.

As United kicked off against Aston Villa, there on the bench next to the likes of Ashley Young and Rio Ferdinand was Fletcher.

Having battled back from ulcerative colitis, the Scottish international began the comeback trail with a series of outings in United’s reserve team. And yet with the festive season approaching, Moyes now has now seemingly deemed his countryman ready for first-team action.

With Michael Carrick out until next year, Fletcher’s return could not be timelier.

At his best, Fletcher was one of the first names on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team-sheet. And on retiring, United’s former boss even took the time to single out the 29-year-old and wish him a speedy recovery from a condition that led to many fearing he would never play again.

There was a huge cheer when Fletcher’s name was announced prior to kick-off, but it will be an even bigger cheer if and when he finally steps out for the club again, be that today or in the days and weeks ahead.

Following the news, we took to Twitter to see what United fans, and those of other clubs, thought about Fletcher’s return, and you can read a selection of them below:
