The only surprise about Manchester United’s reported interest in Alex Teixeira is that it did not come sooner.
As the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder charge through the United midfield like they were not there in the final group game of this season’s Champions League, the Brazilian staked a huge claim to be the next morning’s rumour mill headline.
And yet nothing was mentioned, until now.
The Mirror claims David Moyes will turn his attention to Teixeira if he is unsuccessful in bringing Kevin Strootman in from Roma.
He could have avoided that problem by signing the Dutchman last summer, prior to his cheap-as-chips move to Italy. But that is just another United mistake in a summer full of them. And in truth the Serie A side are not letting him go having only just got him.
So it is over to Teixeira, or at least the stories linking him with the English champions.
The latest report claims United’s players raved about the 23-year-old’s performance following their 1-0 victory. In fact it is said they were “in awe”. And whether or not that is true they were certainly left in his wake on more than one occasion.
Teixeira had what United’s midfielders do not – spark, the confidence to run at people, and an end product to go with it. He is dynamic while Moyes’s current options are too often lackadaisical. And at just 23, he has years to improve.
While this morning’s stories claim he is valued at around £25million by Shakhtar, transfermarkt.com suggest he has a market value of £11.5million, but either way, Moyes would be wise to consider him.
There is a famous story regarding Cristiano Ronaldo – that United’s players were so impressed when they played against him that they begged Sir Alex Ferguson to buy him.
He did, and we all know what happened next. And while Teixeira may never reach the level of the current Real Madrid forward, he showed in just one game against United that he could do an awful lot for them if he was given the chance.
