A Bundesliga game between the third place team and the team occupying 11th place is normally not the most exciting one. But this time it was different.
Suddeutsche Zeitung titled the game “a wild exchange without guard”. The Bavarian newspaper was right on the money as the Borussia Dortmund v 1899 Hoffenheim game, which ended in a 2-2 draw, really was a tough match. Five yellow cards, 32 fouls, 58 tackles and one referee on the ground.
Marco Reus and Jannik Vertgaard were fighting for the ball near the right sideline. The Hoffenheim defender had the edge, used his body to shield the ball and gave Reus a little push in the back. The 24-year-old, who has recently been linked with big money moves to Arsenal and Manchester United, ran full speed into the assistant referee and tackled him to the ground.
A funny moment at least for everyone but the referee, who yelled at Reus while lying on the ground. However no one was hurt and they shook hands.
After watching Moussa Sissoko hit Mike Jones in the face this weekend for Newcastle United in the English Premier League - you have to wonder just how dangerous a profession football referee's have.
