‘Not true’ - Wenger denies Arsenal ‘concrete move’ for next Ozil playmaker

Hakan Calhanoglu, who has also been linked with Liverpool, does not seem to be on his way to The Emirates Stadium.

A name that has recently crocked up into the transfer columns and rumour chill churns of late has been Hamburg SV playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu.

The teenager has had something of a breakthrough campaign in 2013-14. He signed for the club last summer from Karlsruher but was immediately loaned back to the Baden-Wurttemberg side - as his 14 goals in 31 games helped them earn promotion from 3.Liga to the 2.Bundesliga.

This season he has played 15 times for Hamburg and bagged four goals - earning the reported attention of Liverpool and Arsenal.

But recently it seems Arsenal’s interest has been that dominating the landscape.

The 19-year-old has been dubbed the ‘new Ozil’ by some commentators and his agent stated this week:

"We know of Arsenal's interest. I think they will make a concrete move in December or January. Hakan and Hamburg has been a success story - our wish is that he stays here and continues to evolve."

The story did not stop there.

He went on to elaborate later in the week that his wish was to remain at HSV:

“Arsenal is a terrific club with many great players. But I want to stay at HSV. The club must come to me because of a contract extension”

So it seems that this deal is on the back-burner - even if Arsenal are likely to keep an eye on and track his progress.

This week Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was even fielded a question on Calhanoglu as a specific transfer target - to which he replied:

“All the agents will turn up with names. Many agents have good links with newspapers. The names turn up but that is not true.”

So it seems that for all his talent and his perhaps construed ‘Ozil’ tag that for now Calhanoglu will not be an Arsenal player.
