It was a point apiece for Newcastle and Southampton earlier today as the two surprise packages of the season played out a 1-1 draw at St James' Park.
The Magpies took the lead in the 27th minute through Yoan Gouffran. The Frenchman benefited from poor defending by Southampton's Jos Hooiveld before taking the ball round 'keeper Paulo Gazzaniga and slotting home.
That was how the game stayed until the final 25 minutes, when Jay Rodriguez scored after a fantastic one-two with Steven Davis.
There was a hint of offside in the visitors' eqauliser but replays showed that Alan Pardew and his men could have no complaints.
The result sees Newcastle climb above Tottenham into sixth place in the Premier League table, while Southampton are eighth.
