Arsenal narrowly missed out on securing first place in Group F of the Champions League and having, in theory, a more straight-forward draw in the first knockout round when the competition resumes in February last night as they lost 2-0 to Napoli in Italy.
If they managed to keep the tie 0-0, Arsene Wenger's Gunners would have edged Borussia Dortmund by a point, finishing with 13 after six match-days, however, the concluding moments at the Stadio San Paolo proved to be nail-biting because, if Napoli got a third, Arsenal would have been eliminated on account of goal difference.
While Tottenham Hotspur fans would have no doubt taken great delight in that failure, they remain interested in their North London rivals' progression as Arsenal could potentially draw Real Madrid in the next round and Spurs would bank on their former player, Gareth Bale, returning to England in order to embarrass Mathieu Flamini, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker et al.
With Spurs, Bale had a good personal record against Arsenal, scoring five and providing one assist from ten matches (742 minutes) in all competitions since 2007.
Arsenal lost and came second! Hahahaha oh what a morning! Bale and Ronny will be licking their lips...— SiffMeister (@MaN_qz) December 12, 2013
Even Arsenal fans are not confident…
