Would Manchester United swap Van Persie for Fabregas?

Van Persie Training

Manchester United are expected to spend big in January to boost their hopes of retaining the Premier League title under David Moyes.

It’s been a tough start of the season for the Red Devils and a tough start to life at Old Trafford for David Moyes who arrived in June with the near-impossible task of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson after 26 years in charge of the reigning English champions.

United currently sit 9th in the league having taken 22 points from 15 games, winning 6, drawing four and losing five so far. Last weekend rumours began circulating that start striker Robin van Persie is unhappy at Old Trafford following Ferguson’s departure as well as his assistant Rene Meulensteen who has now taken charge of Fulham.

The manager completely dismissed the claims first revealed by Mark Lawrenson last week and insisted that the Dutch striker is happy at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, speculation ensued that Barcelona are interested in the former Arsenal captain following links between the two domestic champions in the summer over another former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

Moyes went public over his pursuit of the Spanish midfielder who he had hoped would add creativity to the Red Devils’ midfield but the 26-year-old remained at the Camp Nou where his future remains uncertain, especially ahead of the World Cup next summer in Brazil.

Fabregas has not seen the same level of opportunity or faith in him since his departure from North London back to his boyhood club as he waits in line behind the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta for both club and country.

United obviously had some inclination that they could get the deal over the line – otherwise it makes no rational sense that Moyes would have come out publicly on numerous occasions to discuss the potential transfer. However, would they be open to a swap deal if the deal was (however hypothetically) on the table?

United have a number of top forwards in Wayne Rooney who has undoubtedly been their star performer so far this season, as well as Javier Hernandez who is not getting enough game-time to be completely satisfied at present and, of course, Danny Welbeck. Obviously Van Persie is the most consistent and dangerous of the four but, at 30 years of age and with a history of injury problems, perhaps a swap for Fabregas would actually be a good deal?

Fabregas would present the ideal creative attacking midfield playmaker that Moyes desperately requires and he already has eight years of Premier League experience with Arsenal and at 26 he’s still got the peak years of his career ahead of him. He scored goals, he makes goals and he’s got a great attitude and appetite for challenging at the highest level and he’ll be doing his utmost to get into the Spain team this summer.

He’s valued around £40 million which is a bit more than Van Persie and if the Dutchman isn’t happy (which is still not confirmed, I know) then perhaps a deal could be struck with the Catalans that could be beneficial for everyone.
