Tottenham latest: AVB looks to Anzhi as Maradona is linked

Some of the key stories involving Tottenham Hotspur this Thursday evening.

Tottenham are in action in their final Europa League group game this evening against Anzhi Makhachkala at White Hart Lane with boss Andre Villas-Boas hoping his side can come through the group with a 100% record having won their other five games.

He said: ‘We’re looking for another win and that would be brilliant because it would complete a good run in the group.

‘It would be good to finish on 18 points, that’s all I can say. We will focus on a win, try to get 18 points and hopefully get through the game without injuries.’

The Evening Standard is reporting that AVB will make several changes for tonight’s tie ahead of a busy fixture schedule which means Spurs have to play eight times in 24 days.

AVB said: ‘It has been our pattern in the Europa League to make seven or eight changes, that has worked well for us. We will be rotating and giving others a rest.

‘We have the quality in our squad and we will continue with that. We have Liverpool, West Ham and then Southampton away so it will be good to give some players a breather.’

Zeki Fryers is hoping that a win can help carry some momentum into the next stage of the competition when the knockout stages begin in February.

He told the club’s website: ‘It’s important to maintain our 100% record in the Europa League. Another win will be great for all the players’ confidence.’

Reports in Argentina indicate that Diego Maradona could be a replacement for current boss Andre Villas-Boas according to the Daily Mirror.

The reports in Argentina indicate Maradona is ‘one of the other candidates’. Villas-Boas has had his future called into question recently, and is reported to be facing a crucial period of games right now.

Villas-Boas has said that Tottenham could be looking at more Romanian players following the signing of Vlad Chiriches in the summer according to TalkSport.

‘I think there is always talent coming out of Romanian football. I think it’s always a market we have to be aware of.’

Spurs have been linked with Steaua Bucharest captain Alex Bourceanu according to the report.
