Good news for Liverpool, Chelsea: Barcelona eye Brazilian defender

The Catalan giants are believed to be interested in Corinthians centre-back Gil, meaning they may avoid a move for Premier League stars.

Barcelona have been widely acknowledged as being in the market for a new centre-half, with their existing options such as Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano ageing.

The latest name to be linked with the Camp Nou outfit is Brazilian centre-back Gil, who currently plays for Corinthians in his homeland.

Lancenet suggest that the current La Liga leaders are ready to offer €15 million for the 26-year-old in January to ease their defensive woes, after scouts returned glowing reports on the defender.

Gil has experience in European football before after spending a year with Valenciennes in France, but returned to South America at the start of the year.

The news could well be relief for both Liverpool and Chelsea, as two of their players have ben widely acknowledged as being players on Barca’s radar.

Both Daniel Agger and David Luiz are players that have been linked with a switch to Camp Nou in the past, and Barcelona are still thought to be keeping a firm eye on the Premier League for potential transfer targets.

Neither Agger nor Luiz have been automatic first choices this season at their respective clubs, but it goes without saying that neither Liverpool or Chelsea are especially keen to sell their defenders mid-season.

With Gil in Barca’s sights, some of the Premier League sides should be able to rest more easily.
