The game ended 2-0 to Atletico - but much of the UK press attention on the game has followed the rhetoric, ‘why was Moyes there?’
Well it is heavily reported that Madrid star Koke was the object of his affection. The young Spanish midfielder has recently been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United - but after yesterday’s game declared, ominously for United fans hoping for his acquisition:
“I didn’t know he was there. I’m not worried. I renewed my contract this summer.”
So who else could he have been gandering at?
Well one potential option would be Porto midfielder Fernando.
The box-to-box midfielder was heavily linked with Everton this summer - with Roberto Martinez even reportedly travelling to London to attend a Work Permit hearing for the player.
He was said to be denied the necessary paperwork to play football in the UK because he is yet to make a breakthrough with the Brazilian national set-up.
Not that it matters now. If a Premier League club try’s to snap him up in January they won’t need to beg to the Home Office - Fernando is now a Portuguese citizen, as he considers switching allegiances to play for Portugal in the style of Deco.
And his contract - well that expires at the end of the season so he could be available on the cheap.
He was linked with Manchester United in October and last night he spoke about a new deal at Porto, and hinted at troubles in the process:
“My agent is dealing with it and we'll see what happens. Renewal does not depend only on me but also various aspects. "
He might not be the superstar midfielder that United fans crave - but as a box-to-box player with a great range of passing and technical ability - his availability should not be passed up.
