Pogba quotes suggest Manchester United return is not impossible

Paul Pogba

As Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba again talks about his time at Manchester United, could there be more to his words than mere recollection?

Whatever Manchester United fans think of Paul Pogba, one thing is certain: The Premier League champions would be considerably better off were he still at the club.

The Frenchman’s move to Juventus may have been acrimonious, and plenty feel his agent played a major role in the decision for the then-19-year-old to see out his contract at Old Trafford before agreeing a deal with the Bianconeri, but Pogba is now widely-regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the world.

Given his history, it is no surprise the player is regularly asked about his time at Old Trafford. And yet the regularity with which he talks about it could also suggest he is not quite as “over” his time at United as he would like us to believe.

He appears to revel in his descriptions of Sir Alex Ferguson, constantly painting the former United boss as his reason for leaving.

And he has done so again, in an interview with French Eurosport, also talking of his admiration for the players he once called teammates.

They were exceptional players,” Pogba said. “You’ve got Ferdinand, Rooney, Giggs, Scholes who are there, who give you the ball and have faith in you. You can only be happy.

Unfortunately, the manager was not in the same frame of mind. He was not playing me. I thought I could play at least a little bit more than I was. But I never got that opportunity.”

Now I am playing devil’s advocate a little here, but are we missing something in regards to the regularity with which Pogba talks about United?

After all, he has long since departed, enjoyed huge success at Juventus and is regularly linked with some of the biggest clubs in football, so why is he still talking about Ferguson’s snubs?

Is there a sense of unfinished business, of proving his former manager wrong at the club he no longer controls?

Because with each new interview, one thing is becoming clear: Pogba seems to like United, and appears to hold Ferguson solely responsible for his failure to show what he could do at the Theatre of Dreams.

And those “exceptional players” he holds in such high regard…could he one day reunite with them, arguably the best of the lot?
