England is not too far left behind considering that only experts knew about the midfield talent before this season.
The 19-year-old, who was born in Germany, but chose the Turkish national team instead, played at Karlsruhe SC in Germany’s second and third league and lead his side as a attacking midfielder with a lot of success. He was named third league's best player last year.
But only after his transfer to Bundesliga’s Hamburger SV he started to make huge strides, recording his first goal in the Bundesliga after a late substitution and his second goal in the same game ten minutes later.
Calhanoglu impressed with four goals and two assists in 14 games, which reportedly has alerted Arsenal and Liverpool to make a move in January.
In an interview with the German Sky Sport News the so called “new Mesut Ozil” commented on the transfer rumours by saying: “Arsenal is a terrific club with many great players. Really interesting,”
Calhanoglu said and continued “But I want to stay at HSV. The club must come to me because of a contract extension” meaning that he reportedly has a job in Hamburg till June 2016.
As yet no one has called Calhanoglu’s club it is tricky to analyse this. The “new Mesut Ozil” could have tried to get a raise and spread some rumours to fire up contract talks.
However as we reported earlier Liverpool as well as Arsenal might be in the market nonetheless.
Arsene Wenger isn’t “necessarily in the market for another attacking midfielder – with a number of them already on the books – but the opportunity to land another talented playmaker may be too good to pass up, especially with Hamburg considering his sale in order to balance the books.”
