Roma coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed his client was approached by Manchester United during the summer.
Manchester United's reported summer interest in Italian international Daniele de Rossi was genuine, insists Roma's coach.
Rudi Garcia, recently voted French Manager of the Year for his instant impact at Roma made the statement to France Football.
"Daniele is a great player, and he is Roman. It was explained to me that it was more complicated for him for two years and it was a little bumpy. He envisioned a departure. I told him that his place was here, but I could understand.
"Just this time it was transpired Manchester United contacted the club and the player. Daniele said: 'No, I gave my word, I can not move.' That is class! The mark of a healthy type for which the given word still has value.
"When he scored against Livorno, he went to celebrate his goal with all the bench."
While it is of course another high profile failure of the summer for Manchester United to chalk up, if fans are looking to take a positive from it then at least they tried to sign him.
At least David Moyes landed Marouane Fellaini instead...
