When Chelsea let Nemanja Matic head to Benfica as part of the deal that saw David Luiz go the other way in 2011, we doubt they thought that in 2014 he would be wanted by their current boss, while Luiz languished on the sidelines.
But that is the way fate transpired in his case.
He could have left last summer, but in the end decided to say for ‘one more year’ at the Lisbon club. So now, with just six months left of that year the vultures are circling on Matic like a new singleton.
In the Premier League that interest is said to predominantly be coming from Chelsea and Manchester United.
But don’t you just think this is a Premier League party. He is also heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 - with both mega-rich French clubs, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen.
Well we know for a fact now that PSG want him - because manager Laurent Blanc blurted it out in a press conference yesterday:
“Matic is a good player. He is a young player. Benfica have very good, young players, including those from Balkan countries. As to whether he will be at PSG in the future, I hope to get him but he is already at a big club called Benfica.”
This could be a ploy - to let Benfica know they are serious and start seeing money-bags like a cartoon cat in a suit. It could be the simple admiration of one pro for another.
Either way PSG have the financial and persuasive powers to talk him into a move.
Despite his obvious talent, many have questioned his monumental price-tag - with a release clause in the ball-park figure of around €40 million in Lisbon - although that was recently said to have dropped to around the £20 million mark. Either way PSG are more than likely to pay it.
So if either side wants him - they have serious competition now.
