'Dangerous' £34.5m summer target - 'I did not speak' to Arsenal

Gonzalo Higuain has made it clear that he never spoke to Arsenal about a potential move in the summer.

Yesterday at the Arsenal press conference Arsene Wenger raised the subject of Gonzalo Higuain when discussing tonight’s Champions League tie against the Italian outfit.

“We'll have to keep Higuaín quiet he is very dangerous and the more we can play outside of our box, the easier that will be. We have to be at our best.”

Now we all know Wenger rates Higuain highly - because he tried to sign him this summer, right?

Well yes and no it transpires.

Gonzalo Higuain was speaking to The Times this week and made it clear that while The Gunners were keen, they never made a formal bid for the Argentine international, in fact he went further than that…

"Yes, but I did not speak to them. They said Arsenal wanted to sign me, that they were there negotiating, but it was Napoli who bought me.”

So he never even spoke to The Gunners this summer.

Arsenal could have signed, sealed and delivered Higuain in a matter of days if they wanted - but Arsene Wenger got it in his head that Liverpool would allow Luis Suarez to leave for North London. We all now know that he was wrong.

By the time he realised that it was too late, Higuain had joined Napoli as the replacement for PSG bound Edinson Cavani for a reported fee of £34.5 million.

Arsenal won’t now be too perturbed by the fact they did not get Higuain. Don’t know if you noticed but they have been doing pretty well without him.

But it does go to show that despite the rumours of him getting on flights, talking to Wenger, his brother and his dad saying Arsenal were ready to talk to him.

In fact all it boiled won to was Arsenal asking Real Madrid if he was for sale, they said yes, and Arsenal likely baulked at the price.

But Higuain will hope to show them what they are missing this evening.
