Outshining Ozil: Wonderkid 'like Ballack/Gazza & any Spanish teens'

Roberto Martinez

Everton attacker described as a hybrid of former Chelsea and ex Tottenham Hotspur legend after man-of-the-match display versus Arsenal.

The British media are oft perceived to be guilty of over-hyping domestic products, however, the man responsible for lauding Ross Barkley to the extent that he is comparable to any Brazilian, Dutchman or Spaniard his age and that he is similar in style to former Chelsea player Michael Ballack and Tottenham Hotspur icon Paul Gascoigne is none other than his club manager at Everton, Roberto Martinez.

'I've never seen a young English player with his sort of mentality,' Martinez is quoted to have said by the Daily Mail.

Barkley produced a starring role for Everton against Arsenal, credited with the man-of-the-match, completing 80% of his passes and showing an understanding of space. Quoted by The Independent, his boss Martinez said: 'When I see Ross, I see bits of [Michael] Ballack and bits of Gazza.'

He continued: 'I can guarantee you Ross Barkley is quite unique. He has incredible balance with both feet, really strong, really powerful.

'He is developing an increased awareness. He is someone you can compare to any other nation, and I mean the young Brazilians, Dutch, Spanish players. He has a gift and that talent. It is always good when people love the game and they give their opinion. Ross, as long as we give him time and allow him to develop, he will be fine.'
