Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin's mixed loan spell has taken an unfortunate turn.
The 22-year-old Frenchman is on loan at Bundesliga club Freiburg, but won't be playing again until the New Year.
He went down early in the second half during their 3-0 home defeat to Wolfsburg at the weekend, substituted off in the 48th minute.
German newspaper site Kicker have revealed that the diagnosis is bleak for the midfielder.
He has an ankle injury which will rule him out until 2014 under the instructions of club doctors.
Coquelin stands to miss this week's Europa League game against Sevilla, along with Bundesliga matches against Schalke and Hannover before the Winter Break.
It's a blow for the youngster, but not a season ending one, however the timing is unfortunate.
After a difficult start - with a red card on his debut for the club, Coquelin was beginning to find his form and scored his first goal for Freiburg just a fortnight ago in the Europa League.
A big 2014 lies ahead for him; as he will need to step it up a notch to not only show he merits a place in Arsenal's first team squad next season, but help Freiburg - who have 11 points from 15 games - stave off relegation.
