All the news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford this weekend…
Every morning we bring you a round-up of the latest transfer news relating to Manchester United, and this weekend was no exception. To read our United-specific transfer news you can find our Saturday report here and our Sunday report here.
United fans woke up on Saturday to reports claiming Robin van Persie had asked for a transfer. But speaking after his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United, David Moyes dismissed the claims.
In quotes published by Sky Sports, the United boss said, “That is absolute nonsense. I don’t know what harder or tougher word I could say but that’s as good as I’ve got.”
Van Persie returned to the starting line-up yesterday, but he was unable to prevent United from suffering their second home league defeat in just three days.
A goal from Yohan Cabaye was enough to give Newcastle all three points, and despite being well off the pace in the title race, Moyes claimed his side were still very much in it.
Speaking to the Telegraph Moyes said, “There is that period of transition but we hoped that it would not be quite as poor as it has been in the last few games. But we will get it right.
“I stand firm that we will be very close to it (the title) and that we will be in and around it come the end of the season.”
Given the club’s current predicament, for that to happen there need to be big changes, not least in the centre of the field.
United were without both Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa on Saturday, the former through suspension and the latter because, apparently, he ate too much!
There have already been reports that the Japanese international was treated by paramedics after having trouble breathing after the midweek match against Everton. But now the Mirror has elaborated on those stories, backed-up by quotes from Moyes.
“It was a bad sickness,” his manager said. “He thinks he ate too much and he had to get his stomach pumped but I think he is okay.”
Another piece of transfer news not touched on in our morning round-ups is the story concerning reported long-term United target Bruno Gomes.
Despite the Brazilian teenager seemingly preparing for a switch to Old Trafford, he has tweeted that he has agreed a move to Sport Club Internacional in his homeland.
And finally, United fans temporarily forgot about their league struggles earlier today, as they sat down to watch the draw for the third round of the FA Cup.
United will play Swansea City at Old Trafford next month, and will hope to rediscover the form that saw the champions win 4-1 on the opening weekend of the season.
