After three straight defeats, Southampton secured a well-deserved point against Manchester City on Saturday, proving they have both the talent and the grit to cut it amongst the Premier League elite.
Another strike from Dani Osvaldo suggested the summer signing has now well and truly found his feet at St Mary’s; while the performance of the entire Saints team was one of confidence and considerable talent.
While the season has many twists and turns ahead, and the usual suspects will almost invariably rise to the top, Southampton suggest they could be more than just half- or one-season wonders.
With an impressive young manager, a wonderful stadium and an ever-improving squad, the future looks very bright for the club currently sitting eighth in the top flight.
And after the match, full-back Luke Shaw tweeted a message that spoke volumes about both the Southampton ethos and how far they can ultimately go together.
As the final whistle blew, four of Southampton’s young but considerably talented players left the pitch together – Shaw, Calum Chambers, James Ward-Prowse and Harrison Reed. And that fact was something Shaw was very happy to draw attention to.
These players have grown up together, and now they are starring for one of the country’s best footballing sides – all of them teenagers, but all of them ready.
Perhaps that, more than anything else, is why this could just be the start for Southampton and their fans.
