All the news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield this weekend…
In a game containing plenty of incident, the Reds took the lead courtesy of a Guy Demel own-goal, before Mamadou Sakho doubled their advantage just before half-time.
Martin Skrtel put through his own net to halve the deficit but a Luis Suarez effort and another own-goal, this time from Joey O’Brien, ensured Liverpool took all three points.
It was a good weekend for the Reds, who saw many of the teams around them lose before Arsenal dropped two points earlier today.
It all means that Brendan Rodgers’ side are five points off top spot in the Premier League.
Speaking after the match, the manager told Sky Sports just how highly he rates Suarez.
“I wouldn’t swap him,” Rodgers said, “I get the chance to work with him every day and what he gives to training and what he gives to the team is just a relentless desire.
“When you have that in a player then you don’t want to let it go. He’s been a great privilege to work with. We have a strong relationship, he’s been fantastic and he’s a joy to watch.”
No one who has seen Suarez play this season would disagree. Reds fans will just hope they can keep hold of their mercurial talent for the long term.
That could be a problem if Real Madrid remain interested, which they do – at least according to the Star on Sunday.
However the newspaper claims the Spanish side have identified Sergio Aguero as their number one transfer target, with Suarez currently considered something of a back-up option.
Considering everything, the Uruguayan would be crazy to swap Merseyside for anywhere given his current form and the possibility of Liverpool bringing sustained success back to Anfield.
“We just need to assess that in the next day or so,” Rodgers said. “It was definitely his hamstring. Hopefully it’s just a strain and we’ll see where we’re at in the next 48 hours.”
And finally, the draw for the third round of the FA Cup was made earlier today, and Liverpool will play either Oldham or Mansfield on the weekend beginning 4 January.
