After another bad day for United and their Dutch striker, what did the fans make of his performance and those whispers of a transfer request?
As reported in the Mirror – and numerous other media outlets – Lawrenson told Ireland’s Today FM, “There’s all sorts of rumours coming out of the training ground at the moment.
“One or two of the press boys that I know that cover Manchester United, they’re even saying that the big whisper is van Persie might have asked for a transfer on Tuesday.”
A whisper is all it is, and David Moyes has since dismissed the claims, but that did not stop fans reacting to the reports, especially given another shocking performance from United yesterday that saw them crash to their second home defeat in three days.
The champions’ 1-0 loss to Newcastle United reinforced the need for a midfield revamp, while also highlighting the importance of the absent Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick.
But despite having little supply, van Persie did not exactly go out of his way to create chances for himself. While it could be argued that he is not that kind of player, United fans may be casting admiring glances at some of the other forwards currently plying their trade in the Premier League, players equally adept at creating their own chances or thriving off the creativity of others.
In his 93 minutes on the pitch, the Dutchman had one shot on target, played three key passes and had a pass completion of 77%.
While he will need time to regain his form after missing recent matches through absence, some fans were less than complimentary about his performance…although we suspect not all were United fans.
We took to Twitter to gage reaction to van Persie’s contribution to the match and to those reports of a possible transfer request, and you can read a selection below:
