Former Arsenal target closes in on incredible record

Nigeria Fan Celebrates AFCON

Nigeria star Vincent Enyeama is in unbeatable form for Lille

It surely cannot be long before a Premier League side shows serious interest in Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

Enyeama kept an incredible 11th consecutive clean sheet for Lille as they defeated Marseille 1-0 in Ligue 1 on Tuesday night.

It is a remarkable run of form for the 31-year-old. Put another way, the ball has not entered the net behind him for 1035 minutes. He is now closing in on the all-time record in France, 1176 minutes set by Gaetan Huard in the 1992-93 season.

Come January, it would be a shock if at least one English top flight side did not make an enquiry for Enyeama. There were tentative suggestions that Arsenal and Sunderland were interested during the summer, with SkySports picking up the story, but neither club registered a serious bid.

Goalkeepers do not come much more experienced than Enyeama, who has won 80 caps for Nigeria, and featured against England in the 2002 World Cup (he kept a clean sheet).

He helped his country win the Africa Cup of Nations in February, when he was named as first-choice goalkeeper in the team of the tournament.

Yet his club career has been relatively modest. Enyeama began his career at Enyimba, and had an extended spell at Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv.

He moved to Lille in 2011, and after a loan spell at Maccabi Tel Aviv, is only now making a real impact with the French side.

Could his current form earn him a move to the Premier League? Lille coach Rene Girard is certainly unsurprised by his keeper’s record.

“He is still going. His strength is that he attributes his success to colleagues, to the team. He knows he has players in front of him giving their maximum. He is grounded.

“We do not think about Huard's record at the moment. We’ll see. It will be complicated. We do not put pressure on him. But, if he can continue like this until the end of the season, we will take it!”
