Manchester City, United and Arsenal target Iheanacho gets first Nigeria call-up

Star of Nigeria Under-17s' World Cup triumph called into senior side.

Arsenal and Manchester City target Kelechi Iheanacho has been called up to the senior Nigeria side for a training camp ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championships.

Iheanacho is one of three Nigerian Under-17 stars who helped their side win the recent Fifa Under-17 World Cup to be called up by national team coach Stephen Keshi.

The young striker, who was voted the best player of the Under-17s World Cup in UAE, has been the subject of interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, although earlier this month his father started that the player favours a move to Manchester City.

He has now been called up ahead of the 2014 African Nations Championships – also known as CHAN – and Keshi is confident of a strong performance.

“We are going to the CHAN for the first time, but we want to be the best at our very first outing,” he said in Brazil on Thursday.

CHAN is played between the best national teams of Africa. The tournament was first held in 2009, and Tunisia are the current champions.

Nigeria are in Group A, alongside hosts South Africa, Mozambique and Mali.

The tournament will be another chance to shine for Iheanacho, who has caught the eye of some of Europe’s top clubs, but appears to have his heart set on City. Last month, his father said: "We prayed and, after talks with family members, we came up with Manchester City, believing he has a future there.”
