Ikay Gundogan was one of Borussia Dortmund's star players in last season's campaign that saw them reach the final of the Champions League.
The German international has yet to agree a new contract at Dortmund and Manchester United and Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely. Hans-Joachim Watzke said that apart from Robert Lewandowski every other player in the Dortmund team would be staying at the club. However he went on to say "Only in the case of Ilkay Gundogan, we do not yet know how it will turn out. We would love to extend (a contract) with him."
The Daily Star have reported that David Moyes would love to add Gundogan to his squad. If indeed Moyes did manage to bring Gundogan to Old Trafford it could mean one or two midfielders would fall down the pecking order. Most notably, Moyes's big signing in the summer transfer window; Marouane Fellaini.
Fellaini has failed to settle in at Old Trafford yet, and United have yet to win a game that he has started in. The £27 million signing has come under scrutiny following some inept performances. Moyes clearly wants to add another midfielder, and has also been linked with Koke from Atletico Madrid.
United already have plenty of players available to play in the centre of the park. Perhaps Michael Carrick is their most reliable, and key central midfielder. If another was brought it, it would seem as if Fellaini would be assigned a back-up role. However Moyes has rotated his midfield around a lot already this season. Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs, Shinji Kagawa, and even Phil Jones are options to Moyes. He hasn't quite found his best team yet.
Safe to say he hasn't been impressed with his midfielders so far, and will therefore be seeking reinforcements in January. December could be a big month for Fellaini to prove his worth to the team.
