Tottenham morning news: Vertonghen has 'swollen' ankle but Dembele OK

All the latest news and gossip from White Hart Lane this morning.

Tottenham Hotspur overcame the new manager hoodoo as they defeated Fulham in Rene Meulensteen’s first game in charge. Andre Villas-Boas again tinkered with the side -although an injury to Mousa Dembele did not help matters.

And a disjointed looking Spurs went 1-0 when Ashkan Dejagah fired the ball beyond Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal.

But it would be two spectacular strikes that won it for Spurs. The first came from Vlad Chiriches - who hammered in a low half volley beyond the rooted Maarten Stekelenburg.

Then Lewis Holtby took over a Andros Townsend ball, cut inside on to his favoured left boot, and hammered home what proved to be the winning goal.

AVB was obviously delighted with the result, the clubs first Premier League win since October, and stated after the game:

“First it was important to conclude the job from the draw against Manchester United and now we have the win so it gives us the winning feeling finally and puts us back on track, and jumps us up a couple of positions in the table as well. And it's another away win for us which is extremely important for our confidence."

AVB is however concerned with an injury problem picked up by Jan Vertonghen in the game. The Belgian defender rolled his ankle and could be a doubt for their upcoming fixtures:

“He rolled his ankle and I think at the moment it’s quite swollen. We’ll assess it today medically. I don’t want to rule him out immediately. At the moment it’s quite swollen.”

He also suggested Dembele’s absence was not serious - he had hip pain they did not want to risk exacerbating.
