‘Aaron Ramsey will be great’ – what Arsenal manager predicted in 2009

Even four years ago, Arsene Wenger new his Wales international would be a star

Aaron Ramsey’s stunning Arsenal form this season may have taken his doubters by surprise, but Arsene Wenger clearly always expected the midfielder to succeed.

Ramsey has scored 15 goals in 26 games in all competitions so far for the Premier League leaders, and exceptional tally for a midfielder, and all at the age of just 22.

It seems the Welshman is set for a stellar career, and no-one can say he has not earned his chance, having initially struggled to make an impression in the Gunners’ first team.

But while some may have initially doubted Ramsey’s ability in his early years, Wenger clearly never did – as an interview from January 2009 proves, when he predicted great things for a player who had then not even turned 20.

“I think he will be a great player for me,” said Wenger at the time, after Ramsey had just helped Arsenal knock Plymouth out of the FA Cup.

“He can play in some Premiership games already.

“But, if you ask whether he can play every week, or every three days, I don’t think he is ready yet. But he shows that he has the sort of quality that he will be there very soon.”

Ramsey has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for Arsenal – and even four years ago Wenger was reluctant to bring in big-name signings, believing that in Ramsey, there was a world-class player in the making.

Wenger continued: “If we do bring in somebody to the squad, I want them to be really special class because we already have good players.

“Players like Ramsey that have shown they are growing.

“Of course they still have lapses and show a lack of experience. But they have quality and they grow quickly.”
