According to reports, the 22-year-old Welshman has been the subject of scouting by Barcelona following his fantastic start to the season scoring 13 goals and making 6 assists in all competitions.
It wouldn’t be first time the Catalans have had their eye on an Arsenal player – the stars who have travelled between the two clubs are numerous with the likes of Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit, Marc Overmars, Alexander Hleb, Alex Song and, of course, the only one to have joined the Gunners from Barca and then return back to the Spanish giants some eight years later; Cesc Fabregas.
Nobody wants to hear another club is scouting their player, especially if its your top scorer and the club in question is Barcelona – the lure of the La Liga champions is far more powerful a temptation with the capability of turning a player’s head in an instant than say, for example, Wycombe Wanderers.
However, whether or not these reports are a) are true or b) come to fruition that sees the Catalans actually make their ‘interest’ known to Arsenal could very well have something of a dilemma on their hands because if a midfield player were to come in at the Camp Nou, there would almost certainly be one leaving. Of course, the first one out the door would probably by Song but, the figures being quotes around the water cooler (internet) for Ramsey are in the region of £50m.
I wouldn’t expect that quite yet – he’s only put in 13 top class performances in his career so far – but, if the offer was on the table, would Arsenal swap Ramsey for Fabregas?
It’s a bit like that film Sophie’s Choice except not about the holocaust. How could Arsenal possibly choose between these two loves? How could they choose between these two relationships? Fabregas is the (recent) history, the former captain, the heart of that team for eight years, the Lost Boy but Ramsey is the Golden Boy, he is the future, he is the spirit of never say die, he is the epitome of overcoming adversity. The stories are just too emotional for Arsenal fans.
Nonetheless, if I gave you as an Arsenal fan Sophie’s Choice but instead it would be Arsene’s Choice, who would you chose? If the swap deal were on the table would you bring back the prodigal son or keep the boy wonder? I think Fabregas is probably the better player of more quality and experience but who’s to say Ramsey won’t surpass the Spaniard’s level by the time he’s 26?
If it was my choice, I’d bring Cesc back but that’s probably nostalgia for bygone times and, in fairness, the time is now and the season is shaping up to be very interesting for Gunners fans. I think if Wenger was given the option, he’d keep Ramsey because he’s always believed in the boy’s potential and placed faith in him and I think he would like to see that core of British players stay at the club for their careers if at all possible. I think the team, the club, the fans and the manager have moved on from Cesc Fabregas but if they were both standing in front of you with puppy-dog eyes crying ‘pick me!’, who would you pick?
