Manchester City have scored a sensational number of goals at home at the Etihad so far this season.
The Citizens under the charge of Manuel Pellegrini this season have been exactly the kind of team who’d want to buy a season to ticket to see – whilst some of their results and performances on the road have been a little lacklustre, the Blues have really taken hold of their home advantage.
City have now scored 29 goals at the Etihad and 40 in total so far this season and after 14 games played they sit poised for the festive period this year on 28 points, just two points off Chelsea in 2nd and six points off leaders Arsenal. City have punished ever side that has had the audacity to turn up at the Etihad. Pellegrini’s side are not only unbeaten at home but have won all seven home fixtures at the Etihad in the Premier League which is more home wins than any other team this term.
They beat Swansea 3-0 last weekend, Tottenham 6-0 the weekend previous to that, Norwich 7-0, Everton 3-1, archrivals Manchester United 4-1, Hull 2-0, and Newcastle 4-0 on the opening weekend. They’ve only conceded two goals as well – that is also the best home defensive record in the league.
The Citizens have, of course, had their problems on their travels but, considering in their title-winning season of 2011/12 they scored a total of 55 goals, averaging 1.4 goals per game and their current rate is 4.1 goals per home game, I’d say there’s plenty of potential for them to smooth out those rough edges on the road.
In fact, City have scored more goals at home than the side did in 7 of the last 20 seasons (combined home and away) but, rather than being compared to the City of yesteryear what is more fundamental this term, to Pellegrini especially, is that they can continue to challenge Arsenal and Chelsea for the title. City are currently just six points behind and the Gunners play both City and Chelsea later this month which will likely have a massive impact on proceedings in the New Year.
Manchester City have in fact scored the same number of goals at home as Arsenal have scored goals in total and City’s goals difference is vastly superior to any other team in the league. They have a goal difference of plus 26 with the next best the Gunners on plus 19.
