Rodgers says Suarez played with tight calf (but he still scored 4)!

Suarez Liverpool 2

Brendan Rodgers addressed the media ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash with West Ham United at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that Luis Suarez played despite not being fully fit in last night’s 5-1 win over Norwich.

Suarez scored four goals and set up one but Rodgers said that he had a tight calf during the game, and last night wasn’t the first time he has had a little niggle then performed to a high standard.

‘To think he actually had a bit of a tight calf before the game but wanting to get out there, put himself out and play he’d done.

‘He’s had that a few times. Before Wigan away last year his hamstring was a wee bit tight. He got a hat-trick that day.

The Liverpool boss also commented on the qualities that makes Suarez a great player rather than just a good player.

‘People always talk about someone being a great player and for me the only way I can define a great player is when he makes the others around him better.

‘I think you get many good players, many really talented players but I think the best at anything in whatever sport it is the greatest ones will always make the others around them better and that’s what Luis Suarez does.

Rodgers also thinks that Manchester United will be ‘in the conversation’ this season despite their worst start to a Premier League season in 12 years.

When asked if United were more in the race for the top four rather than the title Rodgers said: ‘The teams that have probably been around it for the last few years will be the teams that are up there.

‘They’ve got experienced players there’s still an awful long way to go so I’m sure they’ll push on but like most teams will want to keep going and keep the momentum with the team.

‘I’m very sure they will be in the race, they’ll be in the conversation. There’s a lot of adjustment that’s went on there. It very much is a new makeover at the club and I’m sure that’ll take a bit of time.’

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with West Ham there are no fresh injury worries as all players came through last night’s game unscathed but Rodgers was full of praise for Raheem Sterling and has indicated that fellow winger Jordon Ibe may go out on loan.

On his goal in last night’s win, Rodgers said: ‘It was a wonderful finish off his left side for Raheem.

‘A spell out of the team doesn’t do him any harm, he’s learning from really, really good players here and he knows that when he goes in he’s got the confidence of his manager and his mates to go and perform.

‘Young Jordon Ibe, what a talent he is. He will need a loan period because he needs to get games.

‘He’s another one we see for the future but he probably will need a loan period.’
