Zlatan repeat for Arsenal as 7 in 7 striker gives verdict on trial offer

Arsenal famously invited Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a trial over a decade ago only to be rejected. Seemingly they have not learned their lesson, and nor have Manchester United.

Ballon d'Or contender and PSG star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium for Barcelona in 2010. But he could have bagged so many more at the stadium.

While starring as a youngster in Sweden with Malmo he caught the eye of Arsene Wenger, who invited him for a trial. That did not go down well.

Ibrahimovic told the News of the World: "I didn't have a trial - I came for talks with Arsenal.

"But Wenger wanted me to do a trial and I said: 'I don't do trials. You know who I am."

And that was that. The prodigious talent signed with Ajax and went onto become the superstar we know today.

While we can understand Wenger's reticence and keenness to see him in action first hand, that's also what scouts are for - and it remains a famous mistake, a potential superstar signing which could have been handled better.

Fast forward to 2013, and a Swedish talent dubbed 'the next Zlatan' finds himself in a similar situation.

Valmir Berisha is a striker linked with just about every single top club across Europe after his sensational performances at the FIFA under-17 World Cup, where he finished as top scorer - scoring seven goals in seven games.

He currently plays for Halmstads, but not for long, and expects to be signed in the January transfer window.

He today revealed he has rejected chances to go to Arsenal and Manchester United on trial, but would consider Real Madrid as they are his boyhood club:

"I have rejected other clubs who have invited me for trials. For example, Arsenal and Manchester United. It is Real Madrid now, the club of my dreams.

"I am keen to go there, but I think I will turn it down, unfortunately. I do not know, maybe I will go there anyway."

Clubs also interested include Tottenham, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Celtic, Sevilla, Juventus and Villareal, but he has insisted on a decent crack at first team football right away.

It may be a bit of a primadona attitude to have, and maybe the Zlatan comparisons have gone to his head, but he is a kid who is spoiled for choice, and if he can go about making Arsenal and Manchester United regret not being more forceful in chasing his signature - it will go down as another big missed opportunity.
