Liverpool transfer latest: 14-goal striker targeted, Rodgers can't just rely on Suarez

Some of the key stories related to Liverpool this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool have been linked with Burnley striker Danny Ings according to a report in the Daily Mirror. Ings has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Burnley so far this season, and Brendan Rodgers is after the 21-year-old in order to give his squad some depth, according to the report.

The Liverpool manager has said the side can’t just rely on Luis Suarez for goals in the absence of Daniel Sturridge and has asked the likes of Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas to step up to the mark.

Both players haven’t played many games since their arrival on Merseyside and Aspas has just returned from injury.

Rodgers is quoted in the Liverpool Echo saying: ‘The likes of Aspas and Alberto have been at the club for a few months now and have seen the difficulties of playing in the Premier League, how hard it is and the physical demands.

‘I can see them improving and working hard to fit into it. They will improve and get better in time. There was always going to be a period of adjustment.’

Rodgers has admitted he is still searching for his central defensive partnership, and has said that Mamadou Sakho is working hard to get back into the side.

The Liverpool boss is quoted in the Liverpool Echo saying: ‘He came in at a time when we went to a back three and did reasonably well. He’s working very hard to come into the starting line-up.

‘That’s where we are at. He’s a good player, an international, and if he is working well enough in training and the team is not doing so well, it could open the door for him.

‘The last couple of games we were disappointed with the goals at Everton and obviously we made mistakes at Hull. That has been the difficulty for us, getting that balance, the partnership that could cope with all types of strikers.’
