According to Italian press, the Argentinian who's out of contract in the summer is off to Fiorentina rather than moving to David Moyes' side.
He's one of the most highly rated central defenders in Europe so there's no surprise that he's been recently linked with a move to Old Trafford, but it seems that Mateo Musacchio could be set to play in Serie A in 2014.
Musacchio has been a major part of the Villarreal side that were relegated from La Liga in 2012, only to gain promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt and currently sit fifth after 15 games of their first season back.
His stock is rising and the 23-year-old has two caps for his country after making his debut against Nigeria in June 2011, but it's his performances this season which have had the United scouts sniffing around as they look for future replacements for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Despite that, Italian newspaper La Nazione reports that Fiorentina who sit fifth in Serie A are set to sign him but it's not confirmed whether it will be in January for a small fee or on a free transfer in the summer.
It does seem that Villarreal and head coach Marcelino Garcia Toral aren't holding any hope on keeping the centre-half that has been key to the club over the past three seasons, and it will be another transfer disappointment for Moyes at United if they are unable to change Musacchio's mind on the move to Italy.
