Southampton latest: Boruc injured as Diego link played down

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from St. Mary's Stadium...

Southampton came crashing back to earth after a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea. The Saints led after just 13 seconds at Stamford Bridge, as Jay Rodriguez pounced on a terrible pass from Michael Essien to give Mauricio Pochettino's side the lead, but goals from Gary Cahill, John Terry and Demba Ba gave Chelsea the win.

Pochettino suffered a double blow, as goalkeeper Artur Boruc broke his hand in the 3-1 loss, sidelining him for six weeks. The layoff means the Polish international will miss eight Premier League games, and with the inexperienced Paulo Gazzaniga the only alternative, Boruc's absence could damage the Saints' Europa League qualification hopes.

Whether the Argentine boss decides to move for another goalkeeper in the January transfer window remains to be seen, but he continues to be linked with a number of players ahead of the New Year.

Werder Bremen midfielder Aaron Hunt can sign a pre-contract agreement in January, and may be set to move to his mother's homeland. Spurs and Newcastle are also interested in the 27 year old, but it has been reported that the Saints have jumped to the front of the queue.

One former Bremen man who seemingly won't be heading to the South Coast is Brazilian playmaker Diego. The 28 year old Wolfsburg midfielder recently said that he knew of interest in him from Premier League sides, and picked out Southampton as a potential suitor.

"I know there is interest from Premier League clubs. I have heard Arsenal is one of them. It would be the ideal destination for me because their style suits my characteristics. Of course I would say yes to Arsenal. Southampton have great organisation and discipline and big talents like Adam Lallana. But again, there is nothing concrete."

But Pochettino moved to play down speculation of Diego moving to Southampton, suggesting that his side aren't interested in him.

"Of course we know of him, as we know of any other players. But that piece of news doesn't make any sense, because Southampton is not interested in him. We have also seen this news in Spanish media, so I don't really know where these rumours come from.”
