On this day: Arsenal 'in crisis' and after £10m keeper; Benitez harangued

Pepe Reina

On the 1st December 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, and Chelsea.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 1st December 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 1st December 2012...

Michu causes crisis

It was a dismal day for Arsenal as 1,000 fans protested before the game at home to Swansea City - a game that they went on to lose 2-0.

The Emirates was stunned into silence before a crescendo of booing arrived from the home support.

Michu did the job, bagging goals in the 87th and 90th minute leaving Arsenal ‘in crisis’ and in 10th place on 21 points.

What a difference a year makes? The Gunners went seven points clear at top of the table yesterday after beating Cardiff City 3-0 and have ten points more than they did 12 months ago.

What a turnaround.

The reign of Reina?

Arsenal news again from a year ago - as The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. At the time Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was struggling with form and injury so a goalkeeper was reportedly required.

The £10 million reported deal never happened and Reina is now on loan to Napoli - while Szczesny was recently handed a new long-term deal.

What's the Mata Benitez?

Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by West Ham United as Rafa Benitez left Upton Park to chants of ‘one Di Matteo’ from his own fans.

Chelsea had taken the lead through Juan Mata but goals from Carlton Cole, Momo Diame and Modibo Maiga earned The Hammers victory.

Benitez went on to win the Europa League with the club - but remained unpopular with many of the Chelsea faithful.
