Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Raheem Sterling's performance

Raheem Sterling And Rodgers

Raheem Sterling was handed his first start of the season for Liverpool, and it did not end with a win for the Reds.

This time last year Raheem Sterling had impressed us all by not only breaking into the Liverpool first team, but establishing himself as a regular.

An England call-up followed, but the second half of the season he trailed off, burnt out - and finished playing in the under-21s.

This season has mirrored the second half of 2012/13 rather than the first, and his selection against Hull City on December 1 was his first Premier League start of the season.

Unfortunately it ended in defeat, with Liverpool losing 3-1 at the KC Stadium, and Sterling substituted on 66 minutes for Coutinho.

Sterling was clearly a worry for Hull, because he was fouled more times than any other Liverpool player, on four occasions. His three successful dribbling attempts was also the highest of any player on the pitch, but of his three crosses - not one found a teammate.

The teenager ended his display with a pass completion percentage of 93 per cent, and created two goalscoring opportunities - the only player to match this was his replacement Coutinho, who did so in half the time.

And here's where those pass completion stats start to unravel: In 66 minutes - Sterling completed just 14 passes. In fact he touched the ball on just 32 occasions during that time.

It would seem to us that the eye is a greater judge of a good performance, and if Raheem Sterling is reading, he may want to look away now...

Here is what Liverpool supporters had to say on Twitter:
