The Italian giants are ready to make a statement in the new year by trying to sign Ezequiel Garay from Benfica.
With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s contracts at Old Trafford running down and their futures up in the air, it is thought that David Moyes is weighing up potential replacements for the ageing duo.
United have been long linked with Ezequiel Garay, who continues to impress for Benfica both domestically and in the Champions League.
The Argentina international is thought to be one of a host of top centre-halves in United’s gaze, but the English side could face stern opposition for his signing in the January window.
A report in Italy today is suggesting that Inter are ready to battle the Manchester club for the South American stopper’s signature and will launch a €20 million bid him in the new year.
Correio da Manha states that new Nerazzurri owner Erick Thohir is looking to make a statement in the transfer window, and wants to build a new-look defence around Garay.
The Benfica man was recently quoted as saying that he was happy in Portugal, but the Estadio da Luz side are renowned for cashing in on their stars over the years.
With the draw of playing in one of Europe’s top leagues and an increase in salary, it is very likely that Garay would jump at the chance to move to Inter.
With the World Cup just over six months away, Garay will be eager to play regularly and suitably impress to force his way into the Argentina squad for the tournament in Brazil.
Whether United will be ready to match Inter’s offer remains to be seen, as the champions still have the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans on their books.
