Speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, Merson said that he believes that the new signings that Tottenham made in the last transfer window probably weren't the manager's choice, and that he is now struggling to pull things together.
Merson pointed out that not one of Tottenham's new signings are performing, and said that teams aren't scared of playing Tottenham these days as the team are unable, unlike Arsenal, to kill off games.
The former Arsenal attacking midfielder, however, said that Tottenham shouldn't 'panic' and get rid of Villas-Boas. 'Please don't change the manager', he said.
Merson's co-presenter (and former Arsenal forward) Charlie Nicholas also threw his weight behind Villas-Boas, although recognised that the Tottenham manager was up against the ropes.
Nicholas also said he believes that the Tottenham manager is too cautious in the way he sets out the team, and that he seems to be looking to find excuses for the team's poor recent domestic performances (instead of looking at himself). Nicholas said that he thinks Villas-Boas is clearly feeling insecure and that this is showing in his team selections.
