Angel di Maria could be leaving Real Madrid to sign for Monaco.
However at best they are in second place in the race for his signature, with Monaco seizing the initiative.
Di Maria was linked with a move away from Madrid in the summer, and always maintained his intent to stay, snubbing approaches from Arsenal and quickly impressing new boss Carlo Ancelotti who claimed he offered the side real balance.
That was all before his disastrous display in El Clasico, and he has been marginalised from the side ever since by Gareth Bale.
Di Maria is said to be very unhappy with the situation, which has come at the wrong time with him angling for a new deal.
Respected Spanish newspaper El Confidencial now report that Di Maria has opened negotiations with Monaco, where he would join the ranks of recently assembled superstars, Falcao, Moutinho, and James Rodriguez - all of who have also been linked with the Red Devils over the past 12 months.
The common denominator is his agent Jorge Mendes, who also backs the trio, and has engineered their moves.
The paper report that Di Maria feels expendable at Madrid, and Mendes has brought Monaco to the negotiating table, and the player is already speaking to them, although it is unclear whether this is with or without Real's permission.
If United were serious about landing the Argentine, which we are certainly hesitant on, this is certainly not good news for them.
The sheer amount of money Monaco have at their disposal, and the Mendes factor, makes this a tricky negotiation for United to feel their way into, and win.
