Manchester United man jokes about missing training; AVB warns Moyes about Sunday

A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United

Given his outstanding performance for Manchester United against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, the thought of Ryan Giggs celebrating his 40th birthday this morning seems somewhat baffling.

But that is what the Welshman will be doing and, as he joked in an interview with the Mirror, he could miss training today in an attempt to avoid the inevitable practical jokes heading his way.

I’m not coming in on Friday,” the Welshman joked. “I’m going to stay in bed, I think, just in case.”

But in all seriousness that really is not an option, because after starring in the Champions League in what was easily his side’s best performance of the season, Giggs is surely in line for another start on Sunday against Tottenham.

That a 40-year-old could be called into action once more is not a sign of desperation on the part of David Moyes. In short, the way Giggs is playing, he is un-droppable.

And as he prepares to host United on Sunday, Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is confident that last night’s win in the Europa League is a step in the right direction.

Speaking to the Express he said, “Obviously the opponent we have on Sunday is the biggest that we can have.

They are on a good run that changed their fortunes,” the Spurs boss said after watching United dispose of Bayer Leverkusen, but he is not too concerned about that 5-0 hammering.

We don’t expect an easy match, but it will be a completely different story (for United) on Sunday,” he added. “I’m not being disrespectful, but it will be a different game in different conditions and our players will be mentally ready.”

But you can rest assured so will United’s.
