German legend: United ‘slaughtered’ Leverkusen; Moyes linked with Brazil left-back

A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United

Today’s papers are full of praise for Manchester United following their 5-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

The result saw the English champions qualify for the first knock-out stage, although Shakhtar Donetsk’s emphatic win over Real Sociedad means they can still pip United to top spot with a win at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the match, manager David Moyes was clearly thrilled with the performance.

In quotes published by the BBC, Moyes said, “It’s the best we’ve played in my time here and there’s more to come.”

That emphasis on further improvement will be music to United fan’s ears. And they will be hoping a trip to Tottenham on Sunday sees the form continue rather than take an unwanted dip.

The German reaction to yesterday’s result was understandably in stark contrast to United, with Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller saying, “We can’t allow ourselves to be slaughtered like this.”

And finally, the Express picks up on reports from Portugal claiming United are interested in FC Porto left-back Alex Sandro.

With doubts remaining over the long-term future of Patrice Evra, and Everton unlikely to sanction a move for Moyes’ preferred option Leighton Baines, Portuguese newspaper Record claims United will compete with Inter Milan for Sandro’s signing.
