The Tyneside outfit have been linked with a loan move for the United States international forward – what would he bring to St James’ Park?
A number of players stepping out for MLS clubs will be in the public spotlight once the January transfer window opens, with potential loan switches to the Premier League for two months an option.
The likes of Thierry Henry, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane have completed temporary spells at English clubs in the past with success, with Clint Dempsey one of the names that is being linked to do likewise in the new year.
Former club Fulham have been reported as an interested party to bring the versatile forward back to England, but the latest side to be linked with Dempsey is Newcastle.
With the current attacking and wide players at Alan Pardew’s disposal, would signing Dempsey on a short-term deal be a good move by Newcastle?
Dempsey certainly showcased creativity and an eye for goal during his time in England, with the American a top Premier League player for Fulham in the season before he moved to Tottenham. Even at White Hart Lane he had the knack of getting goals in big games, with many Spurs fans surprised their club allowed him to leave.
His versatility means that he can operate on either flank, or as a second striker, and as such he could well be an exciting new addition for the Tyneside club.
At the moment, Pardew’s first-team squad has players on form in the starting XI, including Loic Remy, Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko. However, Dempsey could well add a touch of quality to the existing players and ideally in a second striker role he would be a top option for Alan Pardew.
The goalscoring burden for the club this season has been predominantly picked up by Remy, and as such adding a player capable of hitting the back of the net from deep would be a really beneficial asset for Pardew’s men.
Given that there will be a relatively modest cost associated with bringing Dempsey to Newcastle, this move looks like one that could be very successful.
Newcastle would be advised to try and tie up the deal for the new year soon, as other Premier League clubs will surely be interested in Dempsey in the January transfer window.
