Would Manchester United prefer Koke or Di Maria?

Manchester United manager David Moyes is expected to add creativity to his midfield in January to boost the champions’ hopes of retaining the title.

The Red Devils have relied all too heavily on England Number 10 Wayne Rooney so far this season for their creative play as well as youngster Adnan Januzaj who has been the Red Devils’ shining light so far in an otherwise gloomy start to the season.

After failing with bids to sign Spanish playmakers Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera in the summer, David Moyes is widely expectedly to re-launch his interest in brining one of La Liga’s finest talents to Old Trafford in the New Year – presently the champions are heavily linked with Atletico Madrid youngster Koke and Real Madrid attacker Angel Di Maria.

Following the arrival of world record transfer Gareth Bale from Tottenham in the summer, Di Maria has seen a reduction in his first-team opportunities at the Bernabeu under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

The 25-year-old Argentine who can play as a winger or a centralized attacking midfielder possesses exceptional technical quality as demonstrated by his 3 goals and 6 assists across his La Liga and Champions League appearances this season.

Despite having played for 90 minutes in La Liga on just four occasions out of 13 appearances this season, that tally is quite remarkable – last term, prior to the arrival of Bale and Spanish starlet Isco, Di Maria scored 9 goals and made an incredible 18 assists for the Spanish giants across all competitions.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Spain international Koke is currently attracting the attention of a number of high profile suitors with his displays for Atletico Madrid. The youngster has so far scored two goals and made 10 assists for his club in La Liga and the Champions League.

However, Koke’s contract runs until 2018 which gives Atletico Madrid the control over any potential transfer – United would likely have to pay well over the odds to agree a deal with the club for their young star which, conversely, would likely not be the case with Di Maria who is expected to be offloaded sooner rather than later, not least to generate the funds to bring in a top striker.

Whilst Di Maria only just signed his five-year ‘bumper’ deal last year, he was rumoured to be on his way out at the Bernabeu all summer long and given then World Cup in Brazil just around the corner next summer, he’ll be keen to improve his first-team opportunities.

Overall, Di Maria would be the easier of the two signings to agree in all likelihood and given his superior experience at all levels to Koke, he would probably find it easier to adapt to the Premier League.

Koke would be a great prospect in the long-term context but with time running out for United to challenge for the title this term, Moyes’ best option in January would undoubtedly be Angel Di Maria.
