Arsenal latest: Schar linked, goal machine 'hard to keep' and Mertesacker 'reward'

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed that the talk of a potential new contract is just reward for his good form and development at the club - after a difficult start to life in North London.

The German international struggled at first to adapt to the pace of Premier League football - but has now mastered it becoming one of the best centre backs in the league:

“The first year was tough for me, a very tough challenge, but the club and the manager always trusted me in a special way. I think it is a little reward that we are talking (about a new contract), because I still have one-and-a-half years left.”

"There is no rush, but it seems that some people are delighted with my performances at the moment. I am pleased with the situation.”

Arsenal are said to be after Swiss right-back Fabian Schar. The FC Basle star had an excellent performance against Chelsea this week - as the Swiss champions did the double over their London opponents.

Olympiakos have admitted that it will be difficult to keep hold of star striker Kostas Mitroglou. The Greek champions director of football Jose Miguel Michel has admitted that the reported Arsenal and Liverpool striker could leave considering his current form:

“We’ve known for some time that there has been interest from many clubs. There have been no concrete proposals so far, but if he keeps on doing well, it’s going to be hard to keep him.”

Arsenal seem set to win the race for Real Betis winger, and ‘next Cristiano Ronaldo’, Alvaro Vadillo.

No deal however is on the cards, although his agent admits he would love to play in North London:

“Arsenal have not contacted me. Of course he would like to play for Arsenal, who does not? But right now there is nothing. It is just a rumour.”
