Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Van Persie injury news

Manchester United will not have Robin van Persie on Wednesday night.

Manchester United travel to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, hopeful of securing a win which will seal their qualification to the knockout stages.

With it being David Moyes first ever group stage as a manager, failing to qualify would be unthinkable for him as it would financially for the Red Devils, and while they still have a home game remaining, Shakhtar Donetsk are a dangerous opponent.

So it is not good news that United have been dealt this afternoon, with Robin van Persie ruled out with injury.

The Telegraph report:

"The former Arsenal forward withdrew from the Netherlands squad for their recent fixtures during the international break in order to rest his groin and a long-standing toe injury. But the rest has yet to bring positive results for the 30-year-old, who has endured an injury-interrupted campaign after being an ever-present in the league for United last term."

Van Persie missed United's fixture against Swansea, a 2-2 draw, with the Red Devils wasteful in front of goal, despite Wayne Rooney carving out nine goalscoring opportunities for his teammates and scoring himself.

It leaves United with three different options to play with:

1) Pick Javier Hernandez up front - but the Mexican failed to register a single shot on goal against Cardiff City and did little to convince he deserves to be selected.

2) Pick Danny Welbeck up front - it could be an ideal game to play the striker in his preferred position after a spell out with injury, although he was guilty of blazing over a late chance at the weekend with the score at 2-1.

3) Pick Wayne Rooney up front- this could be an interesting option as it would allow Shinji Kagawa to play in his favoured role behind the striker, and cause Moyes a future headache if he performs to the best of his ability.
