How glad Steve Clarke must be that Shane Long didn't join Hull

Shane Long was close to a move to Hull City in the summer

On Monday night West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long showed how clinical he can be, when he scored two fantastic goals against derby rivals Aston Villa. Unfortunately it was not enough for The Baggies to secure the three points. However it seems Shane Long is in a great run of form now, but it could have been all so different.

In the last few hours of this summer's transfer window, Shane Long found himself on a private plane, flying from Dublin to Leeds/Bradford airport before being taken to Hull City's training ground. Hull had already agreed a £5 million fee with West Brom, but in the late hours of the day, Steve Clarke pulled the plug on the deal.

Steve Bruce was left hugely disappointed, as it would have been a huge coup for the recently promoted side. Long has shown that he certainly has what it takes to play at the highest level in England and it would have been a terrible loss for  The Baggies.

However only last week, Long was linked with a move to Hull again, with Newcastle United also joining the race. Long has not been offered a new contract yet by The Baggies, and according to The Daily Star, The Tigers, and The Magpies are ready to pounce.

The Republic of Ireland international certainly proved his worth to the side on Monday night, and West Brom would be silly not to enter contract negotiations with him. He was at his best last night, and if he can continue his current run of form West Brom will have to do all they can to get him to commit his future.
